exec tsc_interview ENGLISH VERSION (ADAPTED)
As we learned from a visitor in our IRC channel, a program
has been released that aims to improve voice communication over
the Internet. TeamSpeak is the name two programmers have given to this new
tool. We were able to ask the programmers a few questions:
INTERVIEWER: Does this tool fall to the category of (Voice
over IP)?
TEAMSPEAK: This application is used to send peoples
voices to other computers, using an IP connection. So I think it
fits nicely into that category yes.
INTERVIEWER: How long did it take you to get from the idea to
the current beta?
TEAMSPEAK: We have been kidding around making this program
since the beginning of this year (2001). But we got really
serious about it the last two months (May-June) and most work
has been done in the last month. (July)
INTERVIEWER: How many users can use the program if the server
has ISDN/ADSL?
TEAMSPEAK: When 1 person talks, he send maximum 640 Bytes/s
to the server. This stream will be send to all people in the
server. Example: There are 5 people in a room.
1 Talks: The server receives 640 bytes/s and send 4*640=2560
bytes out
2 Talks: The server receives 1280 bytes/s and send
2*4*640=5120 bytes out
We are working on server side mixing. This will mix all the
voices that have be send to 1 client on the server.
The result
will be that the server only send maximum 640 bytes/s to 1
client, even if 2 or more are talking to him (although I would
get mad if I have to listen to 3 people at the same time).
INTERVIEWER: How old are you guys?
TEAMSPEAK: Niels is 23 and Ralf (around 29?)
INTERVIEWER: Where are you guys from?
TEAMSPEAK: Ralf is from Germany, Niels is from the
Netherlands.
INTERVIEWER: Do you want to put BC/GV (BC-BattleCom/GV-GameVoice)
or RW (RogerWilco) out of business?
TEAMSPEAK: YES ;-) We were frustrated with the programs that
are currently available. We decided to show them, they could do
better. Also we needed better for the clans we play in. Of
course if we gain a large percentage of the market, we would be
very proud of what we did.
INTERVIEWER: When will the final release come?
TEAMSPEAK: We have no clue... At the moment we have some
great ideas to implement. And maybe, some new technologies will
come along, enabling us to do great things. So we have to
investigate what legal problems the label "final
release" might bring on freeware software.
INTERVIEWER: What about Software for Linux?
TEAMSPEAK: We plan to do a linux server soon. The client is a
bit harder. At this moment we use MS Codecs, which obviously do
not work. So we have to investigate WINE library's or maybe create
our own compression routines. But that is very hard to do
and not our expertise.
INTERVIEWER: Do you guys plan to host a Public Dedicated
Server?
TEAMSPEAK: Nopes, sorry. We don't wanna support that for now.
It's good mentioning at the point of this Interview, the
software was still in a beta stage.
